The Production Workstation developed at the University of Greenwich is evaluated as a tool for assisting all those concerned with production. It enables the producer, director, and cinematographer to explore the quality of the images obtainable when using a plethora of tools. Users are free to explore many possible choices, ranging from 35mm to DV, and combine them with the many image manipulation tools of the cinematographer. We study a two-machine open shop scheduling problem, in which one machine is not available for processing during a given time interval. The objective is to minimize the makespan. We show that the problem is NP-hard and present an approximation algorithm with a worst-case ratio of 4/3.

The design and development of a comprehensive computational model of a copper stockpile leach process is summarized. The computational fluid dynamic software framework PHYSICA+ and various phenomena were used to model transport phenomena, mineral reaction kinetics, bacterial effects, and heat, energy and acid balances for the overall leach process. In this paper, the performance of the model is investigated, in particular its sensitvity to particle size and ore permeability. A combination of literature and laboratory sources was used to parameterize the model. The simulation results from the leach model are compared with closely controlled column pilot scale tests. The main performance characteristics (e.g. copper recovery rate) predicted by the model compare reasonably well with the experimental data and clearly reflect the qualitiative behavior of the process in many respects. The model is used to provide a measure of the sensitivity of ore permeability on leach behavior, and simulation results are examined for several different particle size distributions.

The SB distributional model of Johnson's 1949 paper was introduced by a transformation to normality, that is, z ~ N(0, 1), consisting of a linear scaling to the range (0, 1), a logit transformation, and an affine transformation, z = γ + δu. The model, in its original parameterization, has often been used in forest diameter distribution modelling. In this paper, we define the SB distribution in terms of the inverse transformation from normality, including an initial linear scaling transformation, u = γ′ + δ′z (δ′ = 1/δ and γ′ = �γ/δ). The SB model in terms of the new parameterization is derived, and maximum likelihood estimation schema are presented for both model parameterizations. The statistical properties of the two alternative parameterizations are compared empirically on 20 data sets of diameter distributions of Changbai larch (Larix olgensis Henry). The new parameterization is shown to be statistically better than Johnson's original parameterization for the data sets considered here.

Newly developed numerical modelling tools are described, which address the 3-dimensional (3D) time-dependent magnetohydrodynamic and thermal behaviour in the liquid pool zone in the adjacent ingot, electrode and crucible. The melting electrode film flow and the droplet detachment initiation are simulated separately by an axisymmetric transient model.
